According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman may perform at the 2024 Grammy Awards, alongside Luke Combs. Even though Chapman doesn't usually make many public appearances, this event could be an exception.
According to insiders familiar with the situation, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will perform "Fast Car" together on stage. The song, originally a folk-pop hit in the late 80s by Chapman, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album "Gettin' Old" in 2023, which helped propel "Fast Car" to the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman does decide to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably a highlight of the night. Variety reported that she has only performed in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" alongside the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman. However, they also mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity to perform together ever came up.
Even though she has mostly stayed away from the spotlight during the song's comeback, Chapman has released a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she mentioned being pleased for Combs and thankful for a new group of fans who are enjoying her song. She also mentioned feeling honored to see her song on the country charts, even though she never anticipated it.
At the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" received the Song of the Year award. This award is given to songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, the songwriter of the song, became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole writer. Even though Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the podium after she won.
"I regret not being able to attend tonight. It is a great honor for my song to receive recognition after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the 'Fast Car' fans."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammy Awards this year. This nomination is his seventh at the awards show, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy win.
The 2024 Grammy Awards ceremony will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4th, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
