Luke Combs to Perform ‘Fast Car’ with Tracy Chapman at the 2024 Grammys: A Historic Moment in Music

  • by

According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will make a rare appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards to perform with Luke Combs.

According to insiders, Variety has reported that Chapman will be performing "Fast Car" with Luke Combs on stage. "Fast Car" is a folk-pop hit from the late 1980s by Chapman, which tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old in 2023, which helped it reach the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably a highlight of the night. According to Variety, she has only been on camera three times since 2009, when her last tour ended.

Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and artist. Despite the country cover reaching No. 1, his team stated in July that there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman. However, they mentioned that Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity to perform together ever came up.

Although she has mostly stayed away from public attention in regards to the song's popularity, Chapman has made a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she expressed that she was pleased for Combs and appreciative of a new group of fans enjoying her song. Chapman mentioned that she never anticipated being on the country charts, but she feels privileged to have her music recognized in that genre.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically for songwriters, so it was given to Chapman, who became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not physically present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

"I regret not being able to attend tonight. It is a great privilege for my song to receive recognition 35 years after its release. Thank you to the CMAs and a special thanks to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car.'"

The song "Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This nomination is his seventh at the awards ceremony. If he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The Grammy Awards for 2024 will be shown from Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4th, 2024. You can watch the show on CBS or stream it live on Paramount+.
