According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will be making a rare appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards to perform alongside Luke Combs.
According to insiders familiar with the situation, Variety has stated that Tracy Chapman will be performing "Fast Car" on stage with Luke Combs. Chapman's hit song from the late 1980s tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Surprisingly, Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old in 2023, which led to his version reaching the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it would be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. Variety reported that she has only been recorded performing three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and singer. In July, after his country cover reached No. 1, his team released a statement indicating that there were no immediate plans for a joint performance with Chapman. However, they also mentioned that Combs would be very enthusiastic if the chance to perform together ever presented itself.
Although she has not been very visible in the media since the song gained popularity again, Chapman has made a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." She mentioned feeling happy for Combs and grateful for a new group of fans who appreciate her song. Chapman also mentioned feeling honored to have her song on the country charts, even though she never anticipated it.
At the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given specifically to the songwriter, so Tracy Chapman, the songwriter, became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole writer. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her victory was announced.
"I regret not being able to attend this evening. It is a great privilege for my song to receive recognition again after its first release 35 years ago. I am grateful to the CMAs, as well as Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony. If he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards are scheduled to take place at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and will also be available for live streaming on Paramount+.
