Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Wow Audiences with ‘Fast Car’ Performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards

  • by

According to a report from Variety, Luke Combs is expected to perform with Tracy Chapman at the upcoming Grammy Awards in 2024. Despite her rare public appearances, Chapman may make an exception for this event.

According to insiders familiar with the situation, Chapman is set to join Luke Combs on stage to sing "Fast Car," a popular folk-pop song from the late 1980s. The song tells the story of a couple trying to break free from a cycle of poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his Gettin' Old album in 2023, which helped propel "Fast Car" to the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will come as a big surprise and will probably be one of the most discussed moments of the evening. Variety reports that she has only appeared on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

Combs has openly expressed his desire to sing "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and performer. Despite his country cover of the song reaching No. 1, his team stated in July that there are currently no plans for him to perform with Chapman. However, they added that he would be enthusiastic if the chance to collaborate with Chapman presented itself in the future.

Chapman, who has kept a low profile since the song became popular again, has shared a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." She mentioned feeling happy and grateful for the song reaching No. 1 on the country charts, and she appreciates a new group of fans enjoying her music. Despite not anticipating being on the country charts, she feels honored to have her song recognized in that genre.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given specifically to songwriters, and in this case, it was won by Chapman. This made her the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

"Unfortunately, I couldn't be there with you all tonight. It's a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I want to express my gratitude to the CMAs and a special thank you to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car.'"

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammy Awards this year. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony and if he is to win, it will be his first Grammy award.

The 2024 Grammy Awards ceremony will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and available for live streaming on Paramount+.
