NEWS: Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman to Share the Stage at the Grammys
Tracy Chapman, who usually stays out of the spotlight, is rumored to be making a special appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards alongside Luke Combs, as reported by Variety.
According to insiders familiar with the situation, Chapman and Luke Combs are set to perform "Fast Car" together at an upcoming event. The song, originally released in the late '80s by Chapman, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his 2023 album "Gettin' Old," which helped propel his version of "Fast Car" to the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. Variety reported that she has only been seen performing in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite the country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there were no current plans for a joint performance with Chapman. However, they mentioned that Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity to perform together ever came about.
Although she has mostly stayed away from the spotlight as the song gained popularity again, Chapman has made a few statements in support of Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and gratitude for a new generation of fans who have taken to her song. She mentioned that she never anticipated being on the country charts but feels honored to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was chosen as the Song of the Year. This award is given specifically to the songwriters, and in this case, it was won by Chapman. This made her the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud after her win was announced.
"I regret not being able to attend tonight. It means a lot to me that my song is being acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs, Luke, and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."
The song "Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony. If he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The Grammy Awards in 2024 will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4th. The event will be shown on CBS and also available to stream live on Paramount+.
