According to a report from Variety, it has been suggested that Tracy Chapman may make a rare appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards, where she will potentially perform alongside Luke Combs.
According to insiders familiar with the situation, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together. The song, originally a folk-pop hit by Chapman in the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from a cycle of poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old in 2023, which led to it becoming a chart-topping hit on country radio.
Should Chapman decide to perform at the Grammys, it will be a major surprise and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. According to Variety, she has only appeared in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with Tracy Chapman, who is the original songwriter and recording artist of the song. Despite the country cover reaching No. 1 in July, Combs' team announced that there were no current plans for a joint performance with Chapman. However, they also stated that Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity to perform with Chapman ever presented itself.
Although she has not been very visible to the public since the song became popular again, Chapman has made a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and appreciation for a new group of fans who are enjoying her song. She also mentioned that she never imagined her song would be on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given specifically to songwriters, and in this case, it was won by Chapman. This marked a significant moment as she became the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
"I regret that I couldn't attend the event tonight. It's a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."
The song "Fast Car" by Combs is up for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This is the seventh time he has been nominated for the award, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy.
The 2024 Grammy Awards ceremony is set to take place at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. Viewers can watch the show on CBS or stream it live on Paramount+.
