Walmart is planning to expand by adding more stores and enhancing some of their current locations.
CNBC announced that the company plans to either construct new or renovate over 150 "large-format" stores throughout the United States within the next five years. The Associated Press reported that Walmart has not opened any new stores in the last three years.
What does a Walmart Supercenter with a larger format look like? Walmart has released press images of its design for these planned stores, but has not disclosed the specific cities where they will be located.
Walmart announced that they will have their "Store of the Future" concept in certain locations, featuring more displays and QR codes for customers to scan and access more product information. Before this announcement, Walmart was already in the process of remodeling 650 locations to incorporate this concept.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Walmart president and CEO John Furner highlighted the significant capital investment in labor, supplies, and tax revenue that the company has made in various communities, benefiting them greatly.
CNBC reported that the company chose not to disclose the expenses associated with the stores.
Walmart has stated that their new stores will prioritize sustainability in their design. They will feature energy-efficient lighting and equipment throughout the locations.
Apart from focusing on sustainability initiatives indoors, Walmart is also working on improving its parking area. The company announced its intentions to install fast-charging stations for electric cars.
Another big change that Walmart is making is the development of a nationwide network of affordable electric vehicle fast-charging stations. The goal is to make it easier and more accessible for Walmart customers and employees to own and use electric vehicles.
According to CNBC, Walmart has over 4,600 stores in the United States and has a workforce of almost 1.6 million employees.
