Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Make Grammy History with “Fast Car” Performance

  • by

According to a report from Variety, Tracy Chapman, who usually stays out of the public eye, may make a special appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards to perform with Luke Combs.

According to insiders, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will perform together on stage, singing Chapman's hit song "Fast Car" from the late 1980s. The song tells the story of a couple trying to break free from a cycle of poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his Gettin' Old album in 2023, which helped it reach the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and a highly-discussed highlight of the event. Variety reports that she has only appeared on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with its original songwriter and recording artist. Despite the country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman. However, they also mentioned that Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity to perform together ever came up.

Even though she has not been very visible in the public eye since the song became popular again, Chapman has made a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." She expressed happiness for Combs and gratitude for a new group of fans who are enjoying her song. Chapman also mentioned that she never imagined her song would be on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically for songwriters, so it was given to Chapman, who became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud after her win was announced.

I regret not being able to attend tonight. It is a great honor for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since its release. Thank you to the CMAs and a special thank you to Luke and all the fans of 'Fast Car'.

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This is his seventh nomination at the Grammys, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The 2024 Grammy Awards are scheduled to take place at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
