According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility of Tracy Chapman making a rare appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards where she will be performing with Luke Combs. Chapman is not known for making frequent public appearances, but this event might be an exception.
According to insiders familiar with the situation, Variety has stated that Chapman and Luke Combs will perform "Fast Car" together. The song, originally released by Chapman in the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his 2023 album Gettin' Old, which helped it reach the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it would be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. Variety reports that she has only appeared in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to sing "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and performer. Despite his cover version reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that they have no current plans for a joint performance with Chapman. However, they also mentioned that Combs would be very enthusiastic if the chance to perform together ever came up.
While she has mostly remained private about the revival of the song, Chapman has made a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and appreciation for a younger audience enjoying her music. She mentioned that she never thought her song would be on the country charts, but she is proud to be a part of it.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This accolade is given to songwriters, and in this case, it was awarded to Chapman, making her the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud after her win was announced.
"I regret that I couldn't attend the event tonight. It's a great honor for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since its release. I am grateful to the CMAs and I want to give a special thanks to Luke and all the fans of 'Fast Car'."
The song "Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the event and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
