Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman set to deliver show-stopping performance of “Fast Car” at the 2024 Grammy Awards

According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman may make a rare appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards to perform with Luke Combs. Chapman is known for not frequently appearing in public, but this event may be an exception.

According to insiders, Variety has revealed that Chapman and Luke Combs will perform together on stage, singing Chapman's popular song "Fast Car." The song, originally released in the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old in 2023, which led to it becoming a hit on country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the event. Variety reported that she has only performed in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. In July, after his country cover reached No. 1, his team released a statement stating that there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman, but he would be thrilled if the opportunity presented itself.

Even though she has been mostly quiet about the song's sudden popularity, Chapman has made a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." She expressed her happiness for Combs and gratitude towards a new group of fans who are enjoying her song. Chapman mentioned that she never thought she would be on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included there.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given specifically to songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, the writer of the song, became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud on stage after her win was announced.

"I apologize for not being able to attend this evening. It is a great honor for my song to be acknowledged after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammy Awards this year. This is his seventh nomination at the event, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

In February 4, 2024, the 2024 Grammy Awards will be broadcasted from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California. The event will be shown on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
