Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Perform “Fast Car” at 2024 Grammys: A Historic Moment in Music

  • by

According to a report from Variety, Tracy Chapman, who doesn't frequently appear in public, may make a special appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards where she will perform alongside Luke Combs.

According to insiders, Variety has revealed that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing together on stage to sing "Fast Car," a popular folk-pop song from the late 1980s. The song tells the story of a couple trying to break free from ongoing poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his 2023 album Gettin' Old, and it quickly became a hit on country radio.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it would be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. Variety reports that she has only appeared in front of cameras three times since wrapping up her last tour in 2009.

Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with its original songwriter and singer. Despite his country cover reaching No. 1, his team stated in July that there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be enthusiastic if the chance to perform together ever came up.

Even though she has not been very visible in the spotlight since the song became popular again, Chapman has released a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached number one on the country charts, she expressed her joy for Combs and appreciation for a new group of fans enjoying her song. She mentioned that she never anticipated being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This prestigious honor is given to the songwriter of the winning song, so it was awarded to Chapman, who became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

I apologize for not being able to attend tonight. It means a lot to me that my song is being acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially thankful to Luke and all the supporters of "Fast Car."

"Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This is his seventh nomination at the awards show, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy.

The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
