According to a report from Variety, Tracy Chapman, who is not known for making many public appearances, may perform at the 2024 Grammy Awards alongside Luke Combs.
According to sources familiar with the artists, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together on stage. "Fast Car" is a folk-pop hit from the late 1980s by Chapman that tells the story of a couple trying to break free from a cycle of poverty. In 2023, Combs covered the song on his album Gettin' Old, propelling "Fast Car" to the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be a major shock and probably one of the most discussed moments of the event. As reported by Variety, she has only appeared on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with Tracy Chapman, the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his country cover of the song reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that he currently has no scheduled performances with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity to perform together ever came up.
Even though she has been mostly private about the resurgence of the song, Chapman has made a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." She expressed her happiness for Combs and gratitude for a new group of fans who are enjoying her song. Chapman mentioned that she never imagined her song would be on the country charts, but she is proud to be a part of it.
At the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given specifically to songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, the songwriter of the song, became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole writer. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
I apologize for not being able to attend the event tonight. It is a great privilege to have my song acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the supporters of "Fast Car."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy win.
The Grammy Awards in 2024 will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
