According to a report from Variety, it is said that Luke Combs will be performing with Tracy Chapman at the Grammy Awards in 2024. Tracy Chapman, who usually stays out of the public eye, may make a special appearance at the event.
According to insiders, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together on stage. "Fast Car" is a folk-pop hit from the late 1980s by Chapman that tells the story of a couple trying to break out of a cycle of poverty. The song was unexpectedly included in Combs' discography in 2023 when he covered it on his album Gettin' Old, and it quickly climbed to the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman does decide to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably a significant highlight of the night. According to Variety, she has only been seen performing on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite the country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there are currently no plans for him to perform with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity to perform together ever came up.
Although she has mostly kept a low profile since the song regained popularity, Chapman has released a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached the top spot on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and thankful for a new group of fans enjoying her song. She also mentioned that she never anticipated being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given to songwriters, and in this case, it went to Chapman, who became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
"Unfortunately, I couldn't attend the event tonight. It's a great honor for my song to be acknowledged after 35 years since it was first released. I'm grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony. If he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
