According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will make a rare public appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards where she will perform alongside Luke Combs. Chapman is not known for making many public appearances, making this potential collaboration a notable event.
According to insiders, Chapman and Luke Combs are set to perform together on stage, singing Chapman's popular folk-pop song "Fast Car" from the late 1980s. The song tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. In 2023, Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old, which helped it reach the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. As reported by Variety, she has only been in front of cameras for performances three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite the country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman. However, they mentioned that Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity to perform together did come up.
Even though she has not been in the spotlight much since the song became popular again, Chapman has shown her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car" by making a few statements. She expressed her happiness for Combs and her gratitude towards a new group of fans who have embraced her song. Chapman mentioned that she never imagined her song being on the country charts, but she feels honored to have it there.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award specifically recognizes songwriters, and Tracy Chapman became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read aloud after her win was announced.
"I regret that I couldn't attend the event tonight. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the fans of 'Fast Car'."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony. If he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The Grammy Awards of 2024 will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4th. The event will be televised on CBS and available for live streaming on Paramount+.
