Luke Combs to Perform ‘Fast Car’ with Tracy Chapman at the 2024 Grammys: A Rare Appearance for the Folk-Pop Icon

  • by

News has surfaced that Luke Combs will be performing alongside Tracy Chapman at the Grammy Awards in 2024. Tracy Chapman is not frequently seen in public, but she could be making a special appearance at the upcoming event. This information comes from a report by Variety.

According to insiders, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will perform together on stage, singing Chapman's hit song "Fast Car" from the late 1980s. The song tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. In 2023, Combs covered the song on his album Gettin' Old, causing it to top the country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably a highlight of the event. Variety reports that she has only been on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that he currently has no plans to perform with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity to perform together ever came up.

Even though she has been mostly quiet about the song's sudden popularity, Chapman has made a few comments showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached number one on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and thanked a new group of fans for embracing her song. She mentioned that she never thought her song would be on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" received the Song of the Year award. This award is given specifically to the songwriters, and in this case, it went to Chapman, who became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the podium after her win was announced.

"I regret that I couldn't join you all this evening. It's a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially thankful to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This nomination is his seventh at the awards show. If he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The 2024 Grammy Awards ceremony will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.

15 country music artists who have not yet won a Grammy award are listed in this ranking. This information was compiled by Billy Dukes.
