According to insiders familiar with the situation, Chapman is set to perform with Luke Combs at an upcoming event. They will be singing "Fast Car," which was originally a hit for Chapman in the late 1980s. The song tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old in 2023, which helped it reach the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most memorable moments of the evening. Variety reports that she has only performed in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. His team announced in July that while there were no current plans for a performance with Chapman, Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity ever presented itself.
Although she has not been very visible in the media since the song regained popularity, Chapman has released a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." She expressed her happiness for Combs and appreciation for a new group of fans who have embraced her song after it reached No. 1 on the country charts. Chapman mentioned that she did not anticipate being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.
At the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This recognition is given specifically to songwriters, and in this case, it was given to Chapman. This marked her as the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year solely as a songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, she did send a message to be read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
