Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman to Share Stage at the 2024 Grammys: A Historic Performance in the Making

  • by

According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will make a rare public appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards where she may be performing with Luke Combs.

According to insiders, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together on stage. The song, originally a hit for Chapman in the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from the cycle of poverty. In 2023, Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old, which propelled his version to the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably a highly discussed moment of the event. Variety reports that she has only been in front of cameras for performances three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

However, Combs has been open about his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. His team released a statement in July stating that although there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman, he would be thrilled if the opportunity presented itself.

Even though she has not been in the spotlight much since the song became popular again, Chapman has made a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached number one on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and thankful for a new group of fans enjoying her song. She also mentioned that she never thought her song would be on the country charts, but she feels honored to be there.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given specifically to songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, who wrote the song, became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud after her win was announced.

I regret not being able to attend tonight. It is a great honor for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since its release. I am grateful to the CMAs, Luke, and all the fans of "Fast Car."

The song "Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the event, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

In February 4, 2024, the 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
