According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will make a rare public appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards, where she will potentially perform with Luke Combs.
According to insiders, Variety has reported that Chapman will be joining Luke Combs on stage to sing "Fast Car," which is a folk-pop hit from the late 1980s. The song is about a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his Gettin' Old album in 2023, which helped it reach the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it would be unexpected and probably a highlight of the night. Reports say she has only been seen performing on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his cover of the song reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there were no current plans for a performance with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be enthusiastic if the chance to perform together ever came up.
Although she has mostly stayed away from the spotlight during the song's comeback, Chapman has made a few statements in support of Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she expressed happiness for Combs and appreciation for a younger audience embracing her music. Chapman admitted that she never thought she would be on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically for songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, the songwriter of the song, became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but she did send a message to be read out loud from the stage after her win was declared.
"Unfortunately, I couldn't attend tonight, but I am grateful for my song being acknowledged after 35 years since it was first released. I want to thank the CMAs, Luke, and all the 'Fast Car' fans for their support."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
