According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman may make a rare appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards. Luke Combs is also expected to perform alongside her at the event.
According to insiders, Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together at an upcoming event. The song, originally by Chapman in the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. It was unexpectedly covered by Combs in 2023 and became a hit on country radio charts after being included in his album Gettin' Old.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the event. As reported by Variety, she has only been seen performing on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite the country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team announced that there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman. However, they did mention that Combs would be enthusiastic if the opportunity did come up.
Even though she has been mostly quiet about the renewed popularity of the song, Chapman has released a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." She mentioned feeling pleased and thankful for a new group of fans who are enjoying her song. Chapman also mentioned that while she didn't anticipate being on the country charts, she is grateful for the recognition.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given specifically to songwriters, and it was won by Chapman, who became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the event, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
"I regret that I couldn't attend the event tonight. It is a great privilege for my song to receive recognition 35 years after it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs, as well as to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."
The song "Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The Grammy Awards in 2024 will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and will also be available for live streaming on Paramount+.
