According to a report from Variety, it is said that Tracy Chapman, who doesn't usually appear in public much these days, might make a special appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards where she will perform with Luke Combs.
According to insiders familiar with the situation, it is reported by Variety that Chapman will be joining Luke Combs on stage to sing "Fast Car," which is Chapman's popular song from the late 1980s about a couple trying to break free from poverty. The song was unexpectedly included in Combs' music in 2023 on his album Gettin' Old, and his rendition of "Fast Car" quickly became a hit on country radio.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be a major surprise and a moment that will likely generate a lot of buzz. Reports from Variety indicate that she has only been seen performing on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with its original songwriter and singer. Despite his team stating that there are currently no plans for a collaboration with Chapman, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the chance to perform together ever came up.
Even though she has not been very vocal about it, Chapman has made a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car". She expressed her happiness and gratitude for the song reaching No. 1 on the country charts and for a new generation of fans enjoying her music. Chapman mentioned that she never anticipated being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be there.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given to songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, the songwriter of the song, became the first Black woman to win this award as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud after her win was announced.
"I regret not being able to attend tonight. It is a great privilege to have my song acknowledged again 35 years after its release. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."
The song "Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and will also be available for live streaming on Paramount+.
