According to a report from Variety, Luke Combs is set to perform with Tracy Chapman at the Grammys in 2024. Tracy Chapman, who usually avoids public appearances, may make an exception for this event.
According to sources familiar with the artists, Variety has reported that Chapman will be joining Luke Combs on stage to perform "Fast Car," a popular folk-pop song from the late 1980s that talks about a couple trying to break free from poverty. The song was unexpectedly covered by Combs in 2023 on his album Gettin' Old, which helped it reach the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be a major surprise and probably one of the most discussed moments of the night. Variety reports that she has only appeared in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. In July, after his country cover reached No. 1, his team stated that there were currently no scheduled performances with Chapman, but he would be thrilled if the opportunity presented itself.
Chapman, who has mostly kept a low profile since the song became popular again, has made a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached the top spot on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and gratitude for a new group of fans enjoying her music. She mentioned that she didn't anticipate being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" received the Song of the Year award. This award is given to songwriters, and Tracy Chapman became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud after her win was announced.
"Unfortunately, I couldn't attend the event tonight. I am grateful and humbled that my song has been acknowledged after 35 years since its release. I want to thank the CMAs and give a special shoutout to Luke and all the fans of 'Fast Car'."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This is his seventh nomination at the ceremony, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and will also be available for live streaming on Paramount+.
