Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Wow Audience with ‘Fast Car’ Performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards

  • by

According to a report from Variety, Luke Combs is set to perform with Tracy Chapman at the upcoming Grammy Awards in 2024. Although Tracy Chapman doesn't usually make public appearances, she may make an exception for this event.

According to sources close to the artists, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together on stage. The song, originally released by Chapman in the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his 2023 album "Gettin' Old," which helped it reach the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it would come as a big surprise and probably be one of the most discussed moments of the event. Variety reported that she has only been seen performing on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and singer. Despite his country cover reaching No. 1, his team stated that there are currently no plans for him to perform with Chapman. However, they added that he would be thrilled if the chance to perform together ever came up.

Even though she has not been very visible in the public eye since the song became popular again, Chapman has made a few statements in support of Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached number one on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and gratitude for a new group of fans enjoying her song. She also mentioned that she was surprised to see her song on the country charts, but feels honored by the recognition.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" received the Song of the Year award. This award is specifically for songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, the writer of the song, became the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

"I regret not being able to be present tonight. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the fans of 'Fast Car'."

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony. If he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
