According to a report from Variety, Luke Combs is set to perform with Tracy Chapman at the upcoming Grammy Awards in 2024. Although Tracy Chapman doesn't usually make public appearances, she may make an exception for this event.
According to sources close to the artists, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together on stage. The song, originally released by Chapman in the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his 2023 album "Gettin' Old," which helped it reach the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it would come as a big surprise and probably be one of the most discussed moments of the event. Variety reported that she has only been seen performing on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and singer. Despite his country cover reaching No. 1, his team stated that there are currently no plans for him to perform with Chapman. However, they added that he would be thrilled if the chance to perform together ever came up.
Even though she has not been very visible in the public eye since the song became popular again, Chapman has made a few statements in support of Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached number one on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and gratitude for a new group of fans enjoying her song. During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" received the Song of the Year award. This award is specifically for songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, the writer of the song, became the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter.
