Jelly Roll’s Powerful Message on Addiction: The Meaning Behind His 2024 MusiCares Person of the Year Outfit

  • by

Jelly Roll's outfit at the 2024 MusiCares Person of the Year event in Los Angeles made a strong statement about addiction. He attended the gala with his wife, Bunnie Xo, and used the red carpet as a platform to bring attention to a cause he cares deeply about.

The musician spends a significant amount of time and effort assisting others in their recovery from addiction, following his own transformation in the past few years. He appeared on the red carpet in a black outfit with white text that highlighted the serious issue of addiction in the United States currently.

According to a photo shared on Instagram by Bunnie, Jelly Roll's shirt states that 190 individuals in the United States die every day from drug overdoses.

Jelly Roll was among a group of talented musicians who came together to celebrate Jon Bon Jovi as the MusiCares Person of the Year in 2024 for his philanthropic efforts. During the event, Jelly Roll performed "Bad Medicine" on stage and shared his excitement on social media by expressing disbelief that his mother wouldn't believe he was part of such a prestigious event.

During the annual Grammy Weekend event, various artists performed classic songs. Lainey Wilson sang "We Weren't Born to Follow," Shania Twain performed "Bed of Roses," Jason Isbell sang "Wanted Dead or Alive," and the War and Treaty performed "I'll Be There for You." The event also included a joint performance by Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen, along with other all-star tributes.

Jelly Roll acknowledges that he made poor choices involving drugs and criminal activities when he was younger, which led to him being incarcerated. However, after his daughter was born, he decided to make a change in his life. He went to Washington, D.C., to speak in front of the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee on January 11. During the hearing on the opioid epidemic, he shared his personal experiences with drug use and trafficking.

He confessed to lawmakers that he contributed to the issue. Now, he stands before them wanting to play a role in finding a solution.

"…I used to be someone with little knowledge experimenting with drugs in the kitchen, similar to how drug dealers are currently combining various drugs with fentanyl, resulting in the deaths of our loved ones."
