Dolly Parton is interested in organizing a lookalike contest because she is in search of someone who closely resembles her at any point in her career. She hopes to find a doppelganger who can play her in a Broadway musical based on her life.
Yes, it is true. Parton is currently in the process of transforming her life story into a musical, as she disclosed to People magazine.
She expresses that going to Broadway and debuting her own show there has always been a significant goal for her. She wants to ensure that she accomplishes this goal while she is still alive and able to actively participate in it.
By doing so, she will have the opportunity to make artistic choices, such as the unconventional decision to invite individuals from various backgrounds to audition for the role of Dolly. This expands the casting options beyond those with extensive experience in musical theater.
Parton suggests that she could potentially lead a contest called "Finding Dolly," where a wide talent search would take place to find actors for three different versions of the main character. These versions would include a young Dolly, a Dolly from earlier years, and an older Dolly.
"We will be conducting auditions and using various methods to discover these individuals. I believe this will also be an enjoyable experience for the audience," Parton adds. "You never know where we might come across them. They could be complete newcomers to the stage or have some experience in local theaters. Nonetheless, our search for talent will be an exciting part of the process, in my opinion."
Parton has previously mentioned the concept of a musical inspired by her life in various interviews. She expressed her desire to have the show produced by "late '25," as mentioned in her recent discussion with People magazine.
The country music icon has several career aspirations that she is actively pursuing. In a previous interview with Taste of Country, Parton shared her desire to establish her own TV network in the near future.
