Dolly Parton is interested in organizing a lookalike contest because she is searching for individuals who closely resemble her, regardless of the period in her career. The reason behind this search is to potentially select someone for a Broadway musical based on her life.
Indeed, Parton is currently engaged in the process of transforming her own life story into a musical, as she disclosed to People magazine.
She expresses that performing on Broadway and debuting her own show there has always been a significant goal for her. She wants to ensure that she accomplishes this goal while she is still alive and able to actively participate in it.
In this manner, she will have the opportunity to make artistic choices, one of which is the unconventional decision to allow individuals from various backgrounds to audition for the role of Dolly, rather than solely considering those with extensive experience in musical theater.
Parton suggests that she could potentially lead a competition called "Discovering Dolly," which would involve a comprehensive search for talented individuals to portray three different versions of the main character. These versions would include a young Dolly, a Dolly from her earlier years, and an older Dolly, as clarified by the singer.
"We will be conducting auditions and using various methods to discover talented individuals," Parton explains. "I believe this process will also be enjoyable for people. It's exciting because we never know where we will find them. They could be individuals who have never performed on stage before, or perhaps they have only been involved in local theater. However, our search for talent will be an exciting part of the whole experience."
Parton has mentioned the possibility of a musical about her life on previous occasions. In her recent interview with People, the singer expressed her desire to have the show ready by late 2025.
