Breaking the Code: The Controversial Bans of 6 Stars from the Grand Ole Opry

  • by

The Grand Ole Opry is widely regarded as the most prestigious platform for country music. For artists, receiving an invitation to perform at this sacred venue, and later becoming an official member, is often considered a significant highlight in their career.

Nevertheless, it is not uncommon for country music artists to have some difficulties or disagreements with the Opry during their career. Throughout the years, several performers have been requested to step down from performing on the stage for various reasons. These reasons may include not adhering to the venue's unwritten rules of behavior or not meeting the official requirements for maintaining membership.

At the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, a tribute show called Opry Goes Dolly was held to celebrate Dolly Parton's 78th birthday in 2024. However, one of the performers, Elle King, caused controversy by appearing on stage visibly intoxicated. She openly admitted to being extremely drunk and engaged in mildly confrontational conversations with members of the audience. Additionally, she forgot the lyrics to Dolly Parton's song "Marry Me."

The place where the incident occurred expressed regret to those who were upset by King's choice of words. However, numerous supporters of the Opry on social media believed that King should be the one to apologize and some even felt that her actions were serious enough to be banned from performing on the Grand Ole Opry stage.

Throughout the years, there have been multiple cases where artists were banned from performing at the Opry. However, when considering King's actions, is it truly necessary to take such a drastic measure? By examining a few incidents that occurred in the venue's early years, specifically in 1973 or before, it becomes apparent that it is indeed a possibility.

Johnny Cash was no longer allowed to perform at the Opry after a memorable concert in 1973. During this show, he caused quite a scene by destroying stage lights using a microphone stand. The consumption of alcohol played a significant role in this incident. Hank Williams, who is widely recognized as one of the most famous artists banned from the Opry, lost his membership due to his excessive drinking and lack of dependability. As for Jerry Lee Lewis, he was also removed from the Opry stage for various reasons, including using explicit language on live air.

However, it is important to note that there is only one instance of a singer being permanently banned from the Opry, and this decision was not made by the venue itself. Therefore, it is probable that even if King's actions justify a temporary removal from the Opry stage, it is unlikely to have a lasting impact on her ability to perform at the Grand Ole Opry.
