6 Stars Banned by the Grand Ole Opry: A Look at Their Controversial Exits

  • by

The Grand Ole Opry is widely considered as the most respected stage for country music. For artists, receiving an invitation to perform at this prestigious venue, and later becoming an official member, is a significant milestone in their career.

Nevertheless, not all country music stars enjoy a consistently positive relationship with the Opry throughout their entire careers. Throughout the years, several performers have been requested to leave the stage for various reasons, such as breaking the venue's unwritten rules of behavior or not meeting the official membership criteria.

At the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, there was a tribute show called Opry Goes Dolly in honor of Dolly Parton's 78th birthday in 2024. However, one of the performers, Elle King, caused quite a stir when she appeared on stage clearly intoxicated. She openly admitted to the audience that she was heavily under the influence, engaged in confrontational exchanges with concert attendees, and even forgot the lyrics to Dolly Parton's song "Marry Me." This behavior sparked outrage among the audience.

The place where the incident occurred expressed regret to those who were upset by King's words. However, numerous supporters of the Opry on social media believed that King should be the one apologizing, and some even thought that her actions were serious enough to justify a ban from performing on the Grand Ole Opry stage.

Over the years, there have been multiple occasions where artists were banned from performing at the Opry. However, is King's conduct truly deserving of such a drastic measure? If we examine a few instances from the venue's early days, specifically from 1973 or before, the clear response is that it is indeed possible.

After a powerful performance in 1973, Johnny Cash was prohibited from performing at the Opry because he destroyed stage lights using a microphone stand. Alcohol played a significant role in this incident. Hank Williams, one of the most well-known artists who was banned from the Opry, lost his membership due to his constant drunkenness and unreliability. Jerry Lee Lewis was also removed from the Opry stage for various reasons, including swearing live on air.

However, it is important to note that there is only one instance of a singer being permanently banned from the Opry, and this decision was not made by the venue itself. Therefore, it is probable that even if King's actions lead to a temporary absence from the Opry stage, it will not have a lasting impact on her ability to perform at the Grand Ole Opry.
