Outlaws and Outrage: The Controversial Stars Banned by the Grand Ole Opry

  • by

The Grand Ole Opry is widely considered as the most prestigious platform for country music. It is a significant milestone in an artist's career to receive an invitation to perform at this esteemed venue. Furthermore, being granted official membership is an honor that holds immense significance in their musical journey.

Nevertheless, it is not uncommon for country music stars to have some rocky moments in their relationship with the Opry over the course of their careers. Throughout the years, several performers have been requested to leave the stage due to various reasons. This could be either because they have breached the venue's unwritten rules of behavior or because they have not met the official requirements for membership.

At the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, there was a special tribute show called Opry Goes Dolly, which celebrated Dolly Parton's 78th birthday in 2024. However, one of the performers, Elle King, caused a lot of controversy during the event. She appeared on stage clearly intoxicated and openly admitted to being heavily drunk. She engaged in slightly confrontational conversation with the audience and even forgot the lyrics to Dolly Parton's song "Marry Me."

The venue expressed regret to those who were upset by King's choice of words. However, numerous fans of the Opry took to social media and believed that King should personally apologize and that her actions were severe enough to justify a ban from performing on the Grand Ole Opry stage.

Throughout the years, the Opry has imposed bans on multiple artists. However, is King's conduct truly deserving of such a severe measure? If we examine some instances from the early years of the venue, all occurring in 1973 or earlier, it becomes evident that it could indeed be justified.

Johnny Cash was not allowed to perform at the Opry anymore after a memorable and intense show in 1973. During that show, he destroyed stage lights using a microphone stand. Alcohol played a significant role in that incident. Hank Williams, who is one of the most well-known artists to be banned from the Opry, lost his membership due to his excessive drinking and unreliability. Similarly, Jerry Lee Lewis was also removed from the Opry stage for various reasons, including using inappropriate language live on air.

However, it is important to note that there is only one instance where a singer's ban from the Opry was both complete and permanent. This decision to maintain the ban forever was not made by the venue itself. Therefore, it is probable that even if King's actions justify a temporary absence from the Opry stage, it will not significantly impact her future ability to perform at the Grand Ole Opry.
