The Grand Ole Opry is widely considered as the most respected stage in country music. When artists receive their initial invitation to perform at this prestigious venue, and later become official members, it is often regarded as a significant milestone in their career.
Nevertheless, it is not uncommon for country music artists to have a mixed or challenging relationship with the Opry over the course of their careers. Throughout the years, several performers have been requested to step down from performing at the Opry due to various reasons. These reasons could include breaching the venue's unwritten rules of behavior or not meeting the official criteria for membership.
At the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, there was a tribute show titled "Opry Goes Dolly" to celebrate Dolly Parton's 78th birthday in 2024. However, one of the performers, Elle King, caused controversy during the event. She appeared on stage clearly intoxicated, openly admitting that she was very drunk. She engaged in mildly confrontational conversations with the audience and even forgot the lyrics to Dolly Parton's song "Marry Me."
The establishment expressed regret to those who were upset by King's choice of words. However, numerous supporters of the Opry on social media believe that King should be the one to apologize and that her actions deserve a ban from performing on the Grand Ole Opry stage.
Throughout the years, the Opry has witnessed numerous cases of artists being banned. However, is King's conduct truly deserving of such a drastic action? Well, examining a few instances from the venue's early years, specifically before 1973, it becomes evident that it is indeed possible.
In 1973, Johnny Cash was prohibited from performing at the Opry due to his destructive behavior during a show. He had damaged stage lights using a microphone stand, and alcohol played a significant role in this incident. Hank Williams, who is widely known as one of the Opry's most famous banned artists, had his membership revoked because of his constant drunkenness and unreliability. Similarly, Jerry Lee Lewis was removed from the Opry stage for various offenses, including the inappropriate use of explicit language during a live broadcast.
However, it is important to note that there is only one instance of a singer being permanently banned from the Opry, and this decision was not made by the venue itself. Therefore, it is highly probable that even if King's actions result in her being temporarily suspended from performing at the Opry, it will not have a lasting impact on her ability to play at the Grand Ole Opry.
