The Grand Ole Opry is considered to be the most respected stage in country music. For artists, receiving an invitation to perform at this prestigious venue is a significant milestone in their career. Likewise, gaining official membership is a highly cherished achievement.
Nevertheless, it is not uncommon for country music stars to have a less than perfect association with the Opry over the course of their careers. Throughout the years, several artists have been requested to step down from performing on the Opry stage due to various reasons. These reasons may include not adhering to the venue's unwritten guidelines for behavior or not meeting the official requirements for membership.
At Nashville's Ryman Auditorium, there was a special tribute show called Opry Goes Dolly, which aimed to celebrate Dolly Parton's 78th birthday in 2024. However, one of the performers, Elle King, caused a significant amount of controversy during her appearance. It was quite evident that she was under the influence of alcohol as she stumbled onto the stage. She openly admitted to the audience that she was extremely intoxicated and engaged in confrontational exchanges with some of the concert attendees. To make matters worse, Elle King even forgot the lyrics to Dolly Parton's song "Marry Me."
The location expressed regret to those who were upset by King's choice of words. However, numerous supporters of the Opry on social media believed that King should be the one to apologize, and some even suggested that her actions were severe enough to justify being prohibited from performing on the Grand Ole Opry stage.
Throughout the years, the Opry has banned numerous artists, but is King's conduct truly deserving of such a drastic measure? If we examine a few cases from the venue's early history, all occurring in 1973 or earlier, the clear response is that it is indeed possible.
Johnny Cash was prohibited from performing at the Opry following a highly energetic show in 1973, during which he destroyed stage lights using a microphone stand. Alcohol played a significant role in this incident. Hank Williams, who is widely recognized as the Opry's most renowned banned artist, had his membership revoked due to his constant intoxication and lack of dependability. Jerry Lee Lewis was also expelled from the Opry stage for various reasons, including uttering an expletive live on air.
However, it is important to note that there is only one singer who has been permanently and completely banned from the Opry, and this decision was not made by the venue itself. Therefore, it is probable that even if King's actions result in her being temporarily absent from the Opry stage, it will not have a lasting impact on her ability to perform at the Grand Ole Opry.
