Nevertheless, it is not uncommon for country music stars to experience difficulties in their long-term association with the Opry. Throughout the years, several artists have faced the possibility of being removed from performing at the venue due to various reasons. At an event called Opry Goes Dolly, held at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium to celebrate Dolly Parton's 78th birthday in 2024, performer Elle King caused controversy. She appeared on stage visibly intoxicated, openly admitting that she was heavily intoxicated. She engaged in a mildly confrontational conversation with the audience and even forgot the lyrics to Parton's song "Marry Me."
The establishment expressed regret to the individuals who were upset by King's choice of words. However, numerous supporters of the Opry expressed on social media that they believed King should be the one to apologize and that her actions were severe enough to deserve being prohibited from performing on the Grand Ole Opry stage.
Throughout the years, there have been multiple cases where artists were banned from performing at the Opry. However, is King's conduct truly deserving of such a severe action? Well, if we examine some instances from the early days of the venue, all occurring in 1973 or prior, it becomes evident that it is indeed a possibility.
Johnny Cash was prohibited from performing at the Opry following an intense performance in 1973 where he destroyed stage lights using a microphone stand. Alcohol played a significant role in causing this incident. Hank Williams, who is widely known as one of the artists banned from the Opry, lost his membership due to his frequent drunkenness and lack of reliability. As for Jerry Lee Lewis, he was removed from the Opry stage for various reasons, including the inappropriate use of profanity during a live broadcast.
However, it is important to note that there is only one singer who has been permanently banned from the Opry, and this decision was not made by the venue itself. Therefore, it is likely that even if King's actions result in her being temporarily removed from performing at the Opry, it will not have a lasting impact on her ability to play there in the future.
