The Grand Ole Opry is widely considered as the most prestigious stage in country music. For musicians, receiving an invitation to perform at this revered venue, and eventually becoming an official member, is often regarded as a significant milestone in their career.
Nevertheless, not all country music stars have a consistently positive association with the Opry throughout their entire careers. Throughout the years, several performers have been requested to exit the stage for various reasons, such as breaching the venue's unwritten rules of behavior or failing to meet the official membership criteria.
At Nashville's Ryman Auditorium, there was a special tribute show called Opry Goes Dolly to celebrate Dolly Parton's 78th birthday in 2024. However, one of the performers, Elle King, caused controversy during her performance. She appeared on stage clearly intoxicated, openly admitting that she was heavily drunk. She engaged in mildly confrontational exchanges with the audience and even forgot the lyrics to Parton's song "Marry Me."
The establishment expressed regret to individuals who were upset by King's choice of words. However, numerous fans of the Opry took to social media to argue that King should be the one to apologize, and some even believed that her actions were severe enough to be banned from performing on the Grand Ole Opry stage.
Throughout the years, the Opry has enforced bans on numerous artists. However, is King's conduct deserving of such a drastic measure? By examining incidents that occurred in the venue's early years, specifically before 1973, it becomes evident that the answer is indeed affirmative.
Johnny Cash was prohibited from performing at the Opry following a highly energetic show in 1973 where he destroyed stage lights using a microphone stand. Alcohol played a significant role in this incident. Hank Williams, who is widely recognized as one of the Opry's most renowned artists, lost his membership due to his excessive drinking and lack of reliability. Additionally, Jerry Lee Lewis was removed from the Opry stage for various reasons, one of which was his use of explicit language during a live broadcast.
However, it is important to note that there is only one instance of a singer being permanently banned from the Opry, and this decision was not made by the venue itself. Therefore, it is probable that even if King's actions result in a temporary absence from performing at the Opry, it will not have a lasting impact on her ability to play at the Grand Ole Opry.
