The Grand Ole Opry is widely considered as the most respected stage in country music. For artists, receiving an invitation to perform at this prestigious venue is a significant milestone in their career. And for those who become official members, it is an even more momentous occasion.
Nevertheless, it is important to note that not all country music stars have a consistently positive connection with the Opry throughout their entire professional journey. Throughout the years, several performers have been required to exit the stage due to various reasons. These reasons include either disregarding the venue's unwritten standards of behavior or not meeting the official criteria for Opry membership.
At Nashville's Ryman Auditorium, there was a tribute show called Opry Goes Dolly to celebrate Dolly Parton's 78th birthday in 2024. However, there was a controversy when performer Elle King appeared on stage clearly intoxicated. She openly admitted being heavily under the influence and engaged in confrontational exchanges with the audience. Additionally, she forgot the lyrics to Dolly Parton's song "Marry Me." This behavior caused outrage among the attendees.
The establishment expressed regret to those who were upset by King's choice of words. However, numerous supporters of the Opry on social media demanded that King herself apologize and even suggested that her actions were deserving of being banned from performing on the Grand Ole Opry stage.
Throughout the years, there have been multiple cases where artists were banned from performing at the Opry. However, is King's conduct truly deserving of such a drastic measure? If we examine some incidents that occurred in the early days of the venue, specifically before 1973, it becomes evident that it is indeed possible.
Johnny Cash was prohibited from performing at the Opry following a memorable concert in 1973. During this show, he destroyed stage lights using a microphone stand, and alcohol played a significant role in his behavior. Hank Williams, who is considered one of the most well-known artists banned from the Opry, lost his membership due to his frequent drunkenness and lack of reliability. Additionally, Jerry Lee Lewis was expelled from the Opry stage for various reasons, including the incident of uttering an expletive live on air.
However, it is important to note that there is only one case of a singer being completely and permanently banned from the Opry, and this decision was not made by the venue itself. Therefore, it is probable that even if King's actions call for a temporary absence from the Opry stage, it will not have a lasting impact on her ability to perform at the Grand Ole Opry.
