The Grand Ole Opry is widely considered to be the most prestigious stage in country music. For artists, receiving an invitation to perform at this revered venue, and eventually becoming an official member, is often seen as a major milestone in their career.
Nevertheless, not all country music stars have a consistently positive connection with the Opry throughout their entire professional journey. Across the years, several performers have been requested to exit the stage due to various reasons. These reasons include either breaking the venue's unwritten rules of behavior or not meeting the official requirements for membership.
At the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, there was a tribute show called Opry Goes Dolly, which was organized to celebrate Dolly Parton's 78th birthday in 2024. However, one of the performers, Elle King, caused a lot of anger and controversy during the show. She appeared on stage clearly intoxicated and openly admitted to being heavily drunk. She engaged in slightly confrontational conversations with the audience and even forgot the lyrics to Dolly Parton's song "Marry Me."
The establishment expressed regret to individuals who were upset by King's choice of words. However, numerous fans of the Opry took to social media to demand that King personally issue an apology and suggested that her actions were serious enough to justify being banned from performing on the Grand Ole Opry stage.
Throughout the years, the Opry has witnessed various cases of artists being banned. However, is King's conduct truly deserving of such a drastic measure? Well, if we examine a few instances from the early years of the venue, all occurring in 1973 or before, it becomes evident that it is indeed a possibility.
In 1973, Johnny Cash was forbidden from performing at the Opry due to a highly energetic show in which he broke stage lights with a microphone stand. Alcohol played a significant role in this incident. Hank Williams, who is widely known as the most famous banned artist from the Opry, had his membership revoked because of his consistent intoxication and unreliability. Additionally, Jerry Lee Lewis was expelled from the Opry stage for various offenses, including the inappropriate use of explicit language during a live broadcast.
However, it is important to note that there is only one instance where a singer was completely and permanently banned from the Opry, and this decision was not made by the venue itself. Therefore, it is probable that even if King's actions justify a temporary absence from the Opry stage, it is unlikely to have any lasting impact on her ability to perform at the Grand Ole Opry.
