PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the United States every year.
A well-known animal rights organization has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, who is the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. In the letter, the organization has asked the club to replace the traditional groundhog with a large coin for the celebration of Groundhog Day on February 2nd.
According to PETA, he lacks expertise in meteorology and it is unfair to continually utilize him for financial gain in the tourism industry.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting the use of a persimmon tree as a weather predictor instead of relying on Phil.
At the time, the president of PETA, Ingrid Newkirk, stated that Phil is highly skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable in the field of meteorology.
PETA is aiming to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by allowing Phil (and his friend) to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. In this sanctuary, Phil can live without any concerns, without being handled and spun around, and freely partake in natural behaviors that he has been deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure.
For more than a century, people from both the local community and visitors from distant places have been making their way to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Their purpose is to witness the annual event where a small and furry creature named Phil comes out of his temporary dwelling. Based on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it indicates whether there will be six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
The film Groundhog Day, which came out in 1993, features Bill Murray playing the role of a weatherman who is frustrated and trapped in a never-ending cycle of time.
