Garth Brooks, the famous country singer, had an interesting encounter with an MLB hitter that resulted in the player changing his batting stance. The current manager of the Chicago Cubs, Craig Counsell, was known for his impressive skills as a hitter during his time in the major leagues, which spanned from 1995 to 2007.
Counsell gained a reputation for his unique and nontraditional way of holding the bat while batting. He would elevate his bat high up in the air, leaving everyone curious about the reasoning behind his technique. Interestingly, Counsell never provided any explanation for his unconventional stance.
After Counsell was appointed as the manager of the Chicago Cubs, he participated in the 2024 Cubs Convention, where an individual finally inquired about the reason behind his previous habit of holding the bat at a high position in the air.
He attributes the cause to Garth Brooks.
Counsell explains that during his time at spring training with the Los Angeles Dodgers, he struggled as a hitter and couldn't manage to get any hits.
During spring training, I successfully hit the ball towards the left field, which made me really excited because it was my first base hit. As I ran towards first base, the crowd erupted in wild cheers. However, to my surprise, when I glanced up, I noticed that Garth Brooks had made a fantastic diving catch in left field, preventing me from getting a hit and extending my streak of not getting any hits in the game to 0-4.
The attendees at the media briefing found this narrative to be incredibly amusing.
The following day, I was set free. I had a conversation with myself, questioning why I was unable to achieve any successes. This self-reflection prompted me to raise my hands high up in the air as a solution. Surprisingly, it proved to be beneficial and worked for me.
I hold Garth Brooks responsible for my terrible batting stance.
Brooks, who is renowned as one of the most influential figures in the music industry, also had a passion for sports during his younger years. He actively participated in baseball and track and field, showcasing his athleticism. Although he had the opportunity to join the New York Mets on three separate occasions, he unfortunately did not secure a spot on the team.
