PETA is advocating for Punxsutawney Phil to step down from his yearly tradition of weather prediction in the United States, as they believe he is being exploited. They propose replacing him with a large coin for future celebrations.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, expressing their disagreement with the use of a groundhog for the Groundhog Day holiday. They have proposed the idea of replacing the groundhog with a large coin for the holiday, which is celebrated on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the person mentioned in the statement is not a meteorologist, and they believe that he should be treated with more respect instead of being used solely for generating tourism revenue every year.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting the use of a persimmon tree as a weather predictor instead of relying on Phil.
According to PETA president Ingrid Newkirk, Phil is highly skilled in digging underground, searching for food, and living in accordance with his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology.
Newkirk from PETA expressed their desire to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd celebration. They want to relocate Phil and his companion to a trustworthy sanctuary, where they can live peacefully and engage in their natural behaviors that are currently restricted in their Plexiglas enclosure.
For over a century, people from both the local community and visitors from different places have been going to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the emergence of Phil, a small and furry creature, from his temporary residence. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it indicates either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
