PETA is advocating for Punxsutawney Phil to step down from his yearly role of predicting the weather in the United States. Instead, they propose using a large coin as a replacement.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to swap out the well-known groundhog with a large coin to celebrate Groundhog Day on February 2nd. This request has sparked controversy.
PETA expressed that the individual in question is not a professional in the field of meteorology and should not be continually used for financial gain in the tourism industry.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they should use a persimmon tree instead of Phil to forecast the weather.
According to Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, Phil is skilled in digging underground tunnels, searching for food, and living in accordance with his natural instincts rather than being knowledgeable about weather patterns.
PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by urging them to send Phil and his companion to a trustworthy sanctuary. This would allow Phil to live without fear, without being handled and spun around, and to engage in the natural behaviors that he is currently unable to do in his Plexiglas enclosure, according to Newkirk.
For over a century, people from both the local community and other places have visited Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the appearance of Phil, a small, furry animal. They eagerly await to see if Phil's presence will result in the casting of a shadow, indicating that there will be six additional weeks of winter, or if there will be no shadow, indicating an early arrival of spring.
