PETA Pushes for Retirement: Giant Coin Proposed as Replacement for Punxsutawney Phil

PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the United States every year. They propose replacing him with a giant coin instead.

The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, who is the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. In the letter, they have asked the club to replace the well-known groundhog with a large coin for the celebration of Groundhog Day on February 2nd.

PETA expressed that the person in question does not possess expertise in meteorology and should not be continuously used for financial gain in the tourism industry.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting they replace Phil with a persimmon tree for weather prediction purposes.

According to Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, Phil is knowledgeable and skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts, rather than being an expert in meteorology.

PETA is aiming to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by advocating for Phil (and his partner) to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. This way, Phil can lead a life free from concerns, without being handled and spun around, and have the opportunity to engage in natural behaviors that he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure.
