PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the United States every year. Instead, they propose replacing him with a giant coin.
A letter was recently sent to Tom Dunkel, who is the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. In this letter, an animal rights group expressed their request for the club to substitute the well-known groundhog with a large coin on Groundhog Day, an annual holiday celebrated on February 2nd.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they should use a persimmon tree as a weather predictor instead of relying on Phil.
During that time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is highly skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living in alignment with his natural instincts. However, she pointed out that he is not an expert in meteorology.
According to Newkirk, PETA is aiming to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd celebration. They are advocating for Phil and his companion to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary, where they can live free from concerns, without being handled and spun around, and be able to partake in their natural behaviors that are currently restricted in their Plexiglas enclosure.
