PETA Calls for Retirement of Punxsutawney Phil: Replace with Giant Coin for Groundhog Day

  • by

PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, who currently takes part in the yearly tradition of predicting the weather in the United States. PETA suggests replacing Phil with a giant coin.

The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, expressing their desire for the club to substitute the well-known groundhog with a large coin to celebrate Groundhog Day on February 2nd.

PETA expressed that the person in question is not an expert in meteorology and should not be taken advantage of annually for financial gains in the tourism industry.

PETA made a suggestion to the club in 2022, proposing the use of a persimmon tree as a weather predictor instead of relying on Phil.

According to Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living in accordance with nature, rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology.

Newkirk from PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by advocating for Phil and his companion to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. This way, Phil can live without any concerns, without experiencing the stress of being handled and spun around, and have the opportunity to engage in natural behaviors that he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure.

For more than a century, people from both the local area and those visiting from different places have been coming to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. They gather to witness a special event where a small and furry creature named Phil comes out of his temporary dwelling. Depending on whether he sees his shadow or not, it signifies either six additional weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.

The film Groundhog Day, which features Bill Murray playing the role of a weatherman who is unhappy and trapped in a repetitive time cycle, was made available to the public in 199
