PETA is advocating for Punxsutawney Phil to step down from his yearly role of predicting the weather in the United States. They propose replacing him with a giant coin instead.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, who is the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. In the letter, they have asked the club to replace the well-known groundhog with a large coin for the celebration of Groundhog Day on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the individual mentioned in the statement is not a meteorologist and should be treated with more respect instead of being used solely for generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request in 2022 to the club, suggesting that they should replace Phil with a persimmon tree for weather predictions.
During that time, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk stated that Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts, rather than having expertise in meteorology.
According to Newkirk, PETA is aiming to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd celebration. They are advocating for Phil, the groundhog, and his companion to be relocated to a reputable sanctuary. In this sanctuary, Phil can live without fear, without being handled and spun around, and have the opportunity to engage in natural behavior that he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure.
Since 1887, people from both the local community and visitors from different places have been making their way to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Their purpose is to witness the emergence of a small, furry creature called Phil from its temporary dwelling. Depending on whether Phil sees its shadow or not, it will indicate either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
