PETA Calls for Retirement of Punxsutawney Phil: Replace Groundhog Day Tradition with a Giant Coin

  • by

PETA is advocating for Punxsutawney Phil to step down from his yearly role of predicting the weather in the United States.

The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to replace the traditional groundhog with a large coin for the Groundhog Day celebration on February 2nd.

PETA expressed that he is not a professional in meteorology and should not be used solely for the purpose of generating revenue through tourism.

During that time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, mentioned that Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable about weather forecasting.

PETA is aiming to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd celebration by advocating for Phil (and his companion) to be relocated to a reputable sanctuary. This would provide him with a worry-free life, free from being handled and spun around, and allow him to engage in natural behaviors that he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure, according to Newkirk.

For over 130 years, people from both the local community and visitors from various places have been coming to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. They gather to witness the annual event where Phil, a small and furry creature, emerges from his temporary dwelling. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it indicates either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.

The film Groundhog Day, which was released in 1993, features Bill Murray playing the role of a frustrated weatherman trapped in a repetitive cycle of time.
