PETA is advocating for the replacement of Punxsutawney Phil, who is currently involved in predicting the weather in the U.S., as they believe he is being exploited.
A letter was recently sent to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, by an animal rights group with a reputation for causing controversy. In their letter, they have made a request for the club to replace the traditional groundhog with a large coin to commemorate the Groundhog Day holiday, which is celebrated on February 2nd.
PETA expressed their concern that he is not a professional weather expert and should not be continuously used for the sole purpose of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they should use a persimmon tree instead of Phil to forecast the weather.
PETA president Ingrid Newkirk stated that Phil is skilled in digging underground, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable about weather patterns.
According to Newkirk, PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd celebration by relocating Phil and his companion to a trustworthy sanctuary. This way, Phil can live without any concerns, without being handled and spun around, and have the opportunity to engage in natural behaviors that he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure.
For over 130 years, people from both the local community and visitors from distant places have made their way to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Their purpose is to witness the annual event where a small and furry creature named Phil emerges from its temporary dwelling. Depending on whether Phil sees its shadow or not, it will indicate whether there will be six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
