Upon being hired as the manager for the Chicago Cubs, Counsell made an appearance at the 2024 Cubs Convention. During this event, an individual finally inquired about the reasoning behind his previous habit of holding the bat at a high position in the air.
He attributes it to Garth Brooks.
Counsell elaborates on his experience as a player with the Los Angeles Dodgers during spring training, admitting that he struggled as a hitter and was unable to achieve any successful hits.
During spring training, I hit a strong hit towards the left field. I was thrilled as it was my first base hit of the season. Excitedly, I lowered my head and swiftly ran towards first base. The crowd erupted in wild cheers. However, when I glanced up, I was astonished to see that Garth Brooks had made a remarkable diving catch in left field, preventing me from breaking my 0-4 streak.
The spectators present at the media briefing found this tale incredibly amusing.
The following day, I was set free. I engaged in a conversation with myself, questioning why I was unable to achieve any successes. This self-reflection prompted me to raise my hands high up in the air. Surprisingly, this action proved to be beneficial to me.
