PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, who is currently involved in the tradition of predicting the weather in the United States. They propose replacing him with a giant coin.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to replace the traditional groundhog with a large coin for the Groundhog Day celebration on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that he does not possess the expertise of a meteorologist and should be treated with more respect instead of being used annually to generate revenue for tourism.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting the use of a persimmon tree as a weather predictor instead of relying on Phil.
"At the time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living in accordance with his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology."
PETA is advocating for the groundhog club to start off a more compassionate February 2nd by allowing Phil and his companion to be sent to a reputable sanctuary. This would provide Phil with a worry-free life, free from being handled and spun around, and allow him to engage in natural behaviors that he is currently denied in his Plexiglas enclosure, according to Newkirk.
Since 1887, people from the local area as well as visitors from different places have been coming to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the appearance of Phil, a small furry animal, as he comes out of his temporary dwelling. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it determines if there will be six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
