PETA Advocates for Retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, Suggests Giant Coin as Replacement

  • by

PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the United States every year. Instead, they propose the use of a giant coin for the role.

The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to replace the traditional groundhog with a large coin for the Groundhog Day celebration on February 2nd.

PETA expressed that the person in question is not a professional in the field of meteorology, and it is unfair for them to be continuously used for financial gain in the tourism industry.

PETA, an organization focused on animal rights, made a request to the club in 2022. They suggested using a persimmon tree as a means to predict the weather

According to Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, Phil is highly knowledgeable and skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living in a way that aligns with his natural instincts. However, he is not an expert in meteorology.

According to Newkirk, PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd celebration. They are advocating for Phil and his companion to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary, where they can live without any concerns. In this sanctuary, Phil would be able to engage in natural behaviors that are currently restricted in his Plexiglas enclosure.

For over a century, people from both the local community and visitors from various places have been going to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the emergence of a small, furry creature named Phil. This event determines whether Phil's shadow is visible, indicating six more weeks of winter, or if no shadow is seen, suggesting an early arrival of spring.

The film Groundhog Day, featuring Bill Murray as a frustrated weatherman trapped in a repetitive cycle of time, came out in 1993.
