PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for his annual weather prediction in the United States. They propose replacing him with a giant coin.
A group advocating for animal rights has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. In the letter, they have suggested that instead of using a groundhog for the Groundhog Day celebration on February 2nd, the club should use a large coin instead. This proposal has generated controversy.
PETA expressed that the person being referred to is not a meteorologist and should not be used solely to generate revenue from tourism.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they should replace Phil with a persimmon tree for predicting the weather.
Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, expressed that Phil is skilled in digging, searching for food, and living in a way that aligns with his natural instincts rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology.
PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by allowing Phil (and his partner) to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. In this sanctuary, Phil can live without concerns, without being handled and spun around, and have the opportunity to engage in natural behaviors that he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure, as stated by Newkirk.
Since 1887, people from the local community and visitors from different places have been going to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the emergence of a small and furry creature named Phil. This event determines whether Phil's shadow is visible or not, which indicates either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
