PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the United States every year. Instead, they propose using a giant coin for this role.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, expressing their request to substitute the renowned groundhog with a large coin on Groundhog Day, which occurs on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the person in question is not a meteorologist and should not be taken advantage of annually for the sake of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting the use of a persimmon tree as an alternative to Phil for predicting the weather.
At the time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and leading a life that aligns with his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable about meteorology.
According to Newkirk, PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd celebration. They are advocating for Phil and his companion to be sent to a trustworthy sanctuary, where they can live free from concerns and not be subjected to being held and spun around. This would allow them to engage in their natural behaviors, which they are currently deprived of in their Plexiglas enclosure.
For over a century, people from the local community and visitors from various places have been going to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the moment when Phil, a small and fluffy creature, comes out of his temporary dwelling. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it indicates either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
