PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog who annually predicts the weather in the United States. They propose replacing him with a large coin.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, expressing their desire for the club to replace the well-known groundhog with a large coin on Groundhog Day, celebrated on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the person mentioned is not a professional in the field of meteorology and should not be taken advantage of every year for the sake of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they should use a persimmon tree to forecast the weather instead of relying on Phil.
At the time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, mentioned that Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living in accordance with his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology.
Newkirk from PETA expressed their hope to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd tradition. They aim to relocate Phil, along with his companion, to a trustworthy sanctuary. This would allow him to live freely, without any concerns or the need to be handled and spun around. Moreover, Phil would be able to engage in natural behaviors that he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure.
Since 1887, people from both the local community and visitors from different places have made their way to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the emergence of Phil, a small and furry creature, from his temporary dwelling. This event determines whether Phil's shadow is visible, indicating six additional weeks of winter, or if there is no shadow, suggesting that an early spring is on its way.
In 1993, the film Groundhog Day was released. It features Bill Murray playing the role of a weatherman who is unhappy and finds himself trapped in a repeating cycle of time
